I am passionate about textiles, art and technology. Over the course of my 25 plus career in the technology industry I have had occasion to be in places where all these things come together. While at Adobe Systems I sought to seed the fledgeling digital textile printing business with software and solutions for industry partners such as HP, Dupont, Stork, Mimaki, Kimberly Clark, etc. I also worked with pioneering retail and manufacturing companies such as IKEA, Limited Brands, Jones Apparel Group and Hunter Douglas. Some of these early projects were a success, many were learning experiences to build upon.
I have had a decade long dream of DTP (Desktop Textile Printing) and have watched the progress of ink chemistry, printer head technology, color management techniques, and graphics software development slowly converge. I shove fabric through my home inkjet printer. I paint, I dye, I sew on it.
Fast forward to the Web 2.0 world, and the emergence of low cost digital textile printing services like Spoonflower for crafters, quilters, and other fabric lovers. I am thrilled by the outburst of creativity by the early users of these services. And, I see many parallels to my very early days in another kind of DTP, (desktop publishing) both in the US and Japan.
This blog is a place for me to note an occasional thought, idea, or experience that may be of use to users of digital textile printing services and anyone passionate about the intersection of textiles, art, and technology.
